LETTERS OF CREDIT
GREATER PAYMENT CERTAINTY IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE
SUPPORTING CONFIDENCE BETWEEN TRADING PARTNERS
International trade often brings together buyers and sellers operating across different jurisdictions, currencies and commercial environments.
An exporter may be unwilling to release goods without greater confidence that payment will be available, while an importer may be unwilling to pay before receiving evidence that the agreed shipment has taken place.
A documentary letter of credit can help bridge that gap. Under an agreed structure, payment is linked to the presentation of documents that comply with the terms and conditions of the credit.
Subject to applicable permissions, credit approval and correspondent arrangements, ATIB may issue, receive, advise or coordinate documentary credits supporting eligible commercial transactions.
LETTER OF CREDIT CAPABILITIES
The appropriate letter-of-credit structure depends on the underlying trade, counterparties, jurisdictions, payment terms, credit profile and banking route supporting the transaction.
IMPORT LETTERS OF CREDIT
Documentary credits issued in support of eligible buyers purchasing goods or services from suppliers, with payment linked to presentation of documents meeting the agreed credit terms.
EXPORT LETTERS OF CREDIT
Support for eligible exporters receiving documentary credits from buyers, including receipt or advising of the credit, document presentation and coordination through the relevant banking channels.
SIGHT & DEFERRED-PAYMENT CREDITS
Structures under which payment becomes due either following compliant presentation or at an agreed future date, depending on the commercial cycle and approved transaction terms.
CONFIRMATION & CORRESPONDENT SUPPORT
Where commercially and operationally available, additional bank payment support or coordination with approved correspondent institutions may be considered where issuing-bank or country exposure requires further mitigation.
DOCUMENTARY DISCIPLINE IN CROSS-BORDER TRADE
A letter of credit provides confidence only when its terms are clear, commercially achievable and supported by accurate documentary presentation.
-
The buyer, seller and underlying trade clearly identified
-
Payment conditions documented before shipment begins
-
Documentary requirements aligned with the commercial transaction
-
Credit and correspondent arrangements established appropriately
-
Discrepancies identified and addressed through agreed procedures
-
Trade, sanctions and financial-crime risks assessed throughout
ATIB may assess the applicant, beneficiary, goods, jurisdictions, transaction value, payment terms, repayment source and documentary requirements before accepting a mandate. Payment remains dependent on the role accepted by the relevant bank, compliance with the credit terms and the successful completion of applicable credit, trade and regulatory requirements.
GREATER PAYMENT CERTAINTY ACROSS BORDERS
Letters of credit can provide greater confidence where buyers and sellers require an independent documentary mechanism governing when payment becomes due.
Their effectiveness depends on realistic terms, accurate documentation, appropriate credit support and disciplined coordination between the commercial parties and the banks involved.
Funding required before or after shipment may connect with Import & Export Finance. Wider operating liquidity may require Working Capital Finance, contractual obligations may be supported through Credit Guarantees, while currency and cash-flow requirements may connect with Treasury & Liquidity Solutions.
