CREDIT GUARANTEES
STRENGTHENING CONFIDENCE BEHIND COMMERCIAL COMMITMENTS
PROVIDING ASSURANCE WHERE PERFORMANCE MATTERS
Commercial counterparties may require evidence that an obligation is financially supported before entering into a contract, releasing an advance payment, awarding a tender or allowing work to proceed.
A bank guarantee can provide additional assurance by creating a separate undertaking under which the issuing bank may be required to pay the beneficiary if the applicant fails to meet the obligation described in the guarantee.
Guarantees may support performance, payment, tender participation, advance payments, supply arrangements, project execution and other clearly defined commercial commitments.
Subject to applicable permissions, credit approval and appropriate security, ATIB may issue or coordinate guarantees in favour of approved beneficiaries where the underlying obligation and associated risks can be assessed clearly.
CREDIT GUARANTEE CAPABILITIES
The appropriate guarantee depends on the underlying commercial obligation, beneficiary requirements, duration, amount and circumstances in which a valid demand may be made.
BID & TENDER GUARANTEES
Financial assurance supporting eligible businesses participating in procurement or tender processes where the beneficiary requires evidence that the bidder will maintain its offer and proceed appropriately if selected.
PERFORMANCE GUARANTEES
Guarantees supporting defined obligations to complete work, deliver goods or perform services under an agreed commercial contract.
ADVANCE PAYMENT & RETENTION GUARANTEES
Support for advance payments, mobilisation funds or retained contractual amounts where the beneficiary requires financial protection linked to the applicant’s continuing performance.
PAYMENT & OTHER COMMERCIAL GUARANTEES
Guarantees supporting approved payment, customs, regulatory or other clearly defined commercial obligations where additional financial assurance is required.
FINANCIAL ASSURANCE WITH CLEAR BOUNDARIES
A guarantee can strengthen commercial confidence only when the underlying obligation, amount, duration and circumstances in which payment may be demanded are clearly defined.
-
A genuine commercial obligation clearly identified
-
The applicant and beneficiary understood
-
Guarantee amount and duration aligned with the contract
-
Demand conditions and expiry defined clearly
-
Appropriate credit support behind the bank’s exposure
-
Changes, reductions and demands administered under agreed terms
ATIB may assess the applicant’s financial strength, contractual performance capacity, underlying transaction, beneficiary, jurisdiction, guarantee duration and ability to reimburse the Bank if a valid demand is paid. The existence of a guarantee does not remove the applicant’s responsibility to perform the underlying obligation.
SUPPORTING COMMERCIAL CONFIDENCE RESPONSIBLY
A well-structured guarantee can give a beneficiary greater confidence to award a contract, release funds, accept performance risk or extend commercial terms.
Its effectiveness depends on a genuine commercial purpose, clear wording, appropriate duration, credible applicant capacity and sufficient credit support behind the obligation.
Documentary trade payments may connect with Letters of Credit. Funding required to execute a contract may involve Working Capital Finance or Import & Export Finance, while larger contractual or project-related structures may connect with Structured & Project Finance.
